Welcome to Russell Square

Russell Square is one of the largest and most attractive garden squares in London. It’s a haven that offers a place to relax right in the heart of the West End. Enjoy the fountain, savour the seasons, read, reflect, or meet friends at the cafe for lunch or coffee. On this site you’ll find more about the Square and the surrounding area, more about its long history, and more about the events happening in and around the square.

We hope, too, that you might become a Friend of Russell Square and keep in touch with us – whether you live or work nearby, or are a vistor from far away. All are welcome!

I am trying to find out if anyone knows what became of the building that was once known as The Premier Hotel that existed during the 1950’s. My father will be visiting London from the United States in 2 1/2 weeks and was once stationed in Upper Heyford, R.A.F. in the early 1950’s and on one of his ventures into London stayed at The Premier Hotel and would like to see what has become of that building during his visit later this month. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What a wonderful place. We came across Russell Square when we were walking through London on our trip to the UK.
We are from Brisbane, Australia and were delighted to find such a lovely place and on seeing our first squirrel. We chatted with some friendly and interesting people at the book stall who explained about the square and some of it’s history which was so very interesting for us as we did not know about it at all. Their passion for the square was infectious. They also gave me a newsletter and some other information for my Mum who adores Woburn Abbey. She was thrilled and we would both like to thank you for that very much.
I am wondering if you would help me, please, I may have left my little cannon camera at the book stall counter or in the café. I would appreciate it if you would let me know if anyone has come across it. We visited the park and café on the 19th of September 2017.
Thanks again for giving us a wonderful memory of Russell Square.
Thank you again for a wonderful experience.
